Mount Athos

Mount Athos is one of the most important religious sites in the world. It is a self-governed territory of Greece, and it houses 20 monasteries. The site has been an important spiritual center since the 10th century.

The site was built on a peninsula that juts out into the Aegean Sea, and it is surrounded by hills and forests. Mount Athos is also home to many rare plants, animals, and birds that are only found on this peninsula.

Mount Athos has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years because it was considered to be one of the few places in Europe where people could escape from persecution during this time period. Even today, Mount Athos is home to many churches and monasteries that are dedicated to Christian worship.

Mount Athos was established in 963 AD by Saint Athanasius the Athonite. The monks that live there are called “Athonites” or “Athonites-in-exile.” They are not allowed to leave the peninsula or have any contact with women.

Meteora

Meteora is a complex of monasteries and churches. It is located on the top of a plateau at an altitude of 1,200 meters. The name Meteora comes from the Greek word “meteoros” which means “suspended in air”. The Monasteries are built on natural rock pillars and they are connected by staircases, corridors, and walkways.

The first monastery was founded in the 14th century by three monks who were seeking refuge from invading Turks. They found refuge in these natural rocks and they continued to build more monasteries over time with the help of other monks who came to live there as well.
